Service Project Enhances Everett Senior Center

(article written by Allison Butcher, Public Affairs Director)

On Nov. 11 2009, our association had the privilege of dedicating our Veterans Day community service project, landscaping upgrades at the Everett Senior Center in downtown Everett. The project represents our 87th "100 for 100" community service project in celebration of our centennial.

"We decided to partner with Everett Senior Center for this project because it offers many valuable services for our area veterans," said Executive Officer Sam Anderson. "The project is meant to show our appreciation for veterans."

For this project, Berg's Landscaping, one of our company members, stepped up to the plate by re-positioning the Center's sign and landscaping a corner of their building with grass, shrubs and rocks. The upgrades greatly enhanced the appearance of their senior center.

The project follows on general theme of our Memorial Day community service project, for which Berg's provided labor and materials, with our financial support, to upgrade the entrance to the U.S. Coast Guard's Integrated Support Command in Seattle with landscaping and a new flagpole.

The Nov. 11 dedication was part of a Veterans Day program, which kicked off the Everett Senior Center's 4th Annual United Service Organization Dance, attended by over 400 area veterans. The program included Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson, U.S. Representative Rick Larsen, State Senator Jean Berkey, State Representative Mike Sells and Captain Tom Mascolo of Naval Station Everett. San Anderson represented our association in the program, explaining the significance of the project to the audience.

The dedication was followed by a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at the site of the landscaping upgrades, located at the corner of Pacific and Lombard. Jeff Svik, who is the co-owner of Berg's Landscaping, was on hand for the dedication.

Service Project Enhances Entrance at Coast Guard Base

Our association celebrated Memorial Day early by dedicating our 54th community service project for the year. For this particular project, we thought it would be fitting to do something positive for one of the nation's five armed services.

Our association celebrated Memorial Day early by dedicating our 54th community service project for the year. For this particular project, we thought it would be fitting to do something positive for one of the nation's five armed services.

With help from Business Development Director George Capestany, our association successfully partnered with the U.S. Coast Guard, Integrated Support Command in Seattle to upgrade the entry at the Coast Guard's base.

Master Builders Association member Berg's Landscaping stepped up and provided labor and materials, with our financial support, to replace concrete barriers with three specialty landscaping planters filled with native plants. Our association also installed a lighted flagpole at the Guard House. Both upgrades were intended to enhance the appearance of the Coast Guard entrance.

On Friday, May 22, several association members and staff joined U.S. Coast Guard representatives and Berg's Landscaping at a special ribbon cutting for the project. Executive Officer Sam Anderson said the upgrades were our small way of accomplishing three things: thanking the Coast Guard for its service to our nation and our region, commemorating U.S. men and women who died while in the military service, and celebrating our Centennial.

The U.S. Coast Guard's Integrated Support Command is located at Pier 36 in Seattle.
